The city of New Rome is faced with a duel between Cesare Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. The screenplay was written by Francis Ford Coppola in the early 1980s, but the film was delayed in the second half, partly due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, with 30 hours of second-unit footage shot and a table read starring Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey. The project was canceled after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (p. Coppola abandoned the project altogether in 2007. and only started developing it in 2019. 21:40 Catilina’s character says the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!”. in amazement. However, in the universe, the city of New Rome is derived from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The will of Cronus” or 01:01: 56:49, a statue of Saturn is clearly visible, and there are many more images of Roman deities).

Christianity does not exist in this universe. There is no reason why Catilina would use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!”. and in this context.. Cesar Catilina: *You* want to help me? And, well, I… well, I want to learn. Caesar Catilina: And you think one year of… medical school gives you the right to exploit the wealth of my Emersonian mind? Julia Cicero: Gives me the right? Caesar Catilina: Yes.

I’m ashamed that I liked it
The cinematography was truly a sight to behold. However, the special effects were either a strong compliment to the shot sequences or an embarrassing sight to behold. I enjoyed the dreamlike aesthetic of the films, but the dialogue was either cartoonishly hard to keep up with or seemed out of place for the plot/characters. My favorite part of the film was definitely the “Virgin Pledge” sequence. It also didn’t do anything for the story, but the song was actually good and the visuals were pleasing to the eye. Overall, this film is definitely not for most people. It’s a scary movie that I enjoyed because of the extraordinary performances that gave me a good laugh.
